Jamaal Bowman Loses Re-Election Bid to George Latimer
Bitter and Expensive Democratic Primary Race Ends in Latimer's Victory
Bowman, a Former Educator, Served One Term in Congress
In a hard-fought and expensive Democratic primary race, NBC News projects Westchester County Executive George Latimer has defeated Jamaal Bowman for New York's 16th congressional district.
Bowman, a former educator and activist, won the Democratic primary in 2020 as an untested middle-school principal. He quickly became a rising star in the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
However, Latimer, a more moderate Democrat, was able to capitalize on Bowman's vulnerabilities. Latimer attacked Bowman for his lack of experience and his support for some progressive policies that were unpopular with some voters.
The race was also one of the most expensive House races in the country, with both candidates spending millions of dollars on advertising.
Latimer's victory is a setback for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, which had hoped to use Bowman's win as a springboard for further gains in Congress.
