Amy Jones shines as England's future leader

Wicketkeeper-batter leads team to ODI series victory over West Indies

Jones hit an unbeaten 92 to guide England to victory in the absence of Nat Sciver and Heather Knight

England wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones has spoken about the importance of playing with freedom and enjoying her cricket following the death of her mother last year. Jones led England to a four-wicket victory in the first one-day international against the West Indies in Antigua on Tuesday, hitting an unbeaten 92 off 102 balls.

The 29-year-old, who is captaining England in the absence of Nat Sciver and Heather Knight, said she was "really proud" of her team's performance after they chased down a target of 226 with eight balls to spare.

"It's been a tough few months for me personally, but I'm just trying to play with freedom and enjoy my cricket," Jones said after the match. "I know my mum would have wanted me to do that.

"I'm really proud of the way the team played today. We showed a lot of character to come back from losing early wickets and chase down a tough target."

Jones' innings was her highest score in ODIs and helped England take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second match will be played on Thursday, with the third and final match scheduled for Saturday.
