First Class-Action Lawsuit Filed Against Carnival Over COVID-19 Outbreak
Ruling Marks First Class Action Win Against a Cruise Ship
Passengers Allege Failure to Take Appropriate Measures
Passengers who sailed on a Carnival-owned Princess Cruises ship have filed the first class-action lawsuit against the cruise line, alleging that it failed to take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of passengers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The class action, filed by Shine Lawyers, alleges that Carnival and its owner-operator Princess Cruise Lines knew or should have known about the risks of COVID-19 transmission on cruise ships but failed to take adequate steps to protect passengers.
The lawsuit seeks compensation for passengers who suffered financial losses, medical expenses, or other damages as a result of the outbreak.
The ruling is the first class action win against a cruise ship in the world, according to Shine Lawyers. Susan Karpik, a passenger from the ill-fated Ruby Princess cruise that left 28 people dead from COVID-19, said she was pleased with the ruling.
"This is a victory for all passengers who have been harmed by the cruise industry's negligence," Karpik said. "We hope this ruling will send a message to the cruise lines that they cannot put profits ahead of the safety of their passengers."
